Every cowhide is a by-product of the meat industry. Cattle are raised for meat, so the hide is left over and would otherwise simply be thrown away. By choosing a natural hide, you use a material that already exists instead of a newly made synthetic rug, which takes large amounts of oil and chemicals to produce.
